Subject: Genealogy #14 Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 04:11:01 +0200 Claire Kadin (RITA's family) passed away at the end of January. Her mother Mina was Pikholz on both sides. Condolences to her family. Nitzan Zayit the Pickholz great-great-grandaughter who was hospitalized a few months ago has been released to home care. This does not indicate an improvement. She is not yet a year old. (Nitzan bat Shelomit Pinia) To United States residents - the census is being taken this year and the forms you are filling out will not be accessible even to your immediate family for seventy-two years. Do your descendants a favor - make a photocopy and put it with your personal papers. If you'd like, send me a copy. The results of the Yosef Pikholz signature poll are in and they are both interesting and inconclusive. Eighty percent of those offering an opinion were flat wrong. See the results together with the signatures: http://www.geocities.com/pikholz/josef.htm Less than two weeks ago, our web site got a mention in the daily email of ancestry.com, the leading force in the field. (General - not Jewish.) As a result of this mention, the web site had four hundred visits in forty-eight hours. We had a mention a few days later in Dick Eastman's email column on genealogy-computing. Between these two mentions, we have had 950 visits to the web site in eleven days. Dick Eastman said that it would be polite of us to link to his site from ours, so we now have a page of "resource links." You can get there from our main page. I put three types or links - Jewish genealogy, other genealogy and general Jewish. I tried to keep the references to general Jewish sources both infor- mative and non-controversial and I hope that no one has a problem either with what I included or what I didn't. To more important matters. We have confirmed that the family we called "GOLDE" is part of the family we called "IZY" (Israel Zvi Yehudah). The merged family is called after the patriarch HerschLeib. He and his wife Sara (and in fact we don't know which of the two was the Pickholz) had children in period 1860-1873. We feel very close on the linking of the families LAOR and ROSA - with marriage links (at least) between the ROSA family and the ORENSTEIN and KIWETZ families. The State of New York is no longer providing certain vital information (death certificates etc) by mail, even for a fee. That creates a need for some on the spot research, that is supposedly not very complicated. Volunteers are welcome. The contributions received thusfar for archives research in Warsaw and Lwow have been sent to Europe. We hope that more of you will participate. And thank you to those who have so far. We have the eight Vienna cemetery photos up on the web site. Some have no stones; most have stones which are illegible - but perhaps someone visiting might do better than the caretaker. The study of given names which I mentioned last time is now up to forty-two different given names. There are just a few more to do. That's everything on my list for now. More as it happens.
