To: @PIKHOLZ.PML Subject: New Yorkers in the 1930's - Genealogy #22 Date: Fri, 6 Oct 2000 10:39:25 +0200 Condolences to the family of Rivka Salat who died about six weeks ago. Rivka was the daughter of Eliezer (Pikholz) Haniel and she and her sister Chana (I'm not sure the age order) were the first Pikholz descendants born here for the past two thousand years. Rivka was the mother of Zeev who was killed by a land mine near the Suez Canal in 1968 at age ninteen. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, four grandchildren and a sister. During the summer, I gave some assistance to Barbara, a genealogy researcher in Los Angeles, and in return she checked the Manhattan/Bronx and Brooklyn city directories for the 1930's. City directories were like telephone books in the days when not everyone had telephones. I believe she looked up Pickholz and Pickholtz, but not Pikholz - that would explain the absence of Sam of Brezdowitz and Nathan of Skalat. We also seem to missing Max, but he may have lived in Elizabeth NJ (where his sister Dora Marenus lived) at that time. Also Hersch and perhaps a few others. The large increase in Manhattan/Bronx entries between 1931 and 1933 is curious and I have no explanation offhand, other than possibly a better quality publication. As Barbara points out, she got what she could from LA sources. The NY public libraries certainly have additional directories. Following is Barbara's report. The lines that begin with > are hers. The others are my comments, beginning with a double asterisk. Most of the entries are known and the families are indicated in CAPITAL LETTERS. As I have not completed the update of the web site, I shall continue using the old designations - such as HerschLeib rather than IF1. > Dear Israel: > > I spent some time at the Family History Center today and was > able to get some information for you. There was a TROW directory for 1931 > and one for 1933 - 1934 from the Manhattan and the Bronx. > And there was a POLK directory for Brooklyn for 1933 - 1934. > And that was it. Microfilm # 1,606,147 (surnames A - Z) > > PICKHOLTZ, Berech 484 Grand > PICKHOLTZ, Gussie 484 Grand ** Husband and wife (YITZHAK and HERSCHLEIB). We see here that Golde really did use the name Gussie. > PICKHOLTZ, Isidore 476 E Houston ** Ray's father? > PICKHOLZ, Dave 76 Cannon ** I will bet that this is Ray's uncle, based on a) a similar address below for Sol and b) no wife. (HERSCHLEIB) **David ben Avraham is listed below at a different address and in any case seems never to have been David - only Dave. > 1933 - 1934 TROW's Manhattan/Bronx Directory > (Listings do NOT indicate whether address is in Manhattan > or the Bronx.) Offhand I don't see any other candidates. > PICKHOLTZ, Irving printer 80 Beekman 6th fl h 2251 79th Bkn ** Irving son of Abraham wasn't a printer was he? So this must be the son of Benjamin. > PICKHOLTZ, Murray (Davidson & Pickholtz) r 1847 76th ** Another son of Benjamin > PICKHOLTZ, Phillip slsman r 1844 80th Bkn ** And another son of Benjamin > PICKHOLTZ, Saml (Eva) sec & treas Fried Habdshy Corp > h 19 Crimmings av apt 2C > PICKHOLTZ, Saml v-pres & sec Fried Haberdashery Corp > 124 Nassau **This couple is interesting. They lived in Erie PA both before and after this period. (She was actually born in Erie.) Sam'l's mother was a fried, so this must have been the family business. But we still have no idea how this small family connects with anyone else or even where in Galicia Samuel was born.. > PICKHOLTZ, Selma r 318 W 27th ** Surprise entry. The only Selma we have was born about 1903 in Pittsburgh and appears in the 1920 census in a Philadelphia orphanage. Her mother was Sophie and there was a younger brother Leonard also in an orphanage in Philadelphia in 1920. An older brother Samuel may have died before 1920. What this entry tells us is that in 1933 Selma was still Pickholtz which means there is a good chance she has a Social Security registration on that name. If someone wants to write the check to SocSec ($16.50), I'll write the letter. > PICKHOLTZ, Sol (Alpi) h 76 Cannon apt 9 ** Ray's grandfather and Alpi is his wife Alta. Note same address as David above. (HERSCHLEIB) > PICKHOLTZ, Wm r 49 w 71st **Leaving out the 1925 William, we have two choices - Eric's father and Ruth's father, although both spelled their names without the t. Ruth and Kathy - does the address mean anything to you? (Either BARNEY or ORENSTEIN) > PICKHOLZ, Benj (Anna) Window clnr h 67 av D ** This must be Barney - both the wife and the address fit. Neither fits Benjamin. (BARNEY) > PICKHOLZ, David (Pauline) bedding mfrs 1227 So blvd > h 1165 Simpson apt 6H ** ben Avraham (YITZHAK) > PICKHOLZ, Leo clk r 701 W. 179th apt 36 ** The fact that I cannot find out more about this man annoys me. All we have is born Galicia 1892, registered for SocSec in Brooklyn, 1936, died Jan 1971. No idea where he died or was buried and SocSec has no "last address.". NYC says they have no death certificate. Married? Who knows. we have the parents' names. > PICKHOLZ, Wm student r 67 av D apt 17 **BARNEY or ORENSTEIN - presumably the reverse of the one above. > 1933 - 1934 POLK's Brooklyn Directory Microfilm # 1,404,107 > > PICKHOLTZ, Abr (Lizzie) opr h 546 Elton ** BREZDOWITZ - I wonder why it is spelled this way. He was always Pikholz. > PICKHOLTZ, Benj (Gussie) gro 308 Bedford av > h 156 s 1st (? 156 South First Street/Avenue ?) ** We have one Benj and two Gussies, but not as a couple. There is probably an error here. See entry below - probably Berisch. Wre they in Brooklyn then? > PICKHOLTZ, Benj mineral waters h 1844 80th ** Same Benjamin as in Manhattan - one business, one residence? > PICKHOLTZ, Brish (Gussie) opr h 156 s 1st apt 1 ** see above > PICKHOLTZ, Harry slsmn r 1844 80 th ** Robt's father (RAVJG) > PICKHOLTZ, JW Mrs h 2251 79th ** No idea offhand. Daughter of Berisch and Golde? > PICKHOLTZ, Sylvia r 1844 80th ** Benjamin's youngest - same address. > PICKHOLZ, Abr (Minnie) h 414 s 5th ** Abraham ben YITZHAK > PICKHOLZ, Irving r 414 s 5th ** son of Abraham (same address) > PICKHOLZ, Sol (Mary) dlr h 926 47th apt B5 ** son of Abraham May you all be sealed for a good year.
