I must admit that I haven't been focused on the Pikholz Project much of the summer, largely because I have been working on other branches of my own family and on several parts of my wife's family. But we have had some important Pikholz developments which I'd like to report. As I wrote in the third paragraph of "Genealogy 47," we ordered records which we expected would allow us to identify Scheindel-Pesche (the head of the VIENNA family) as the daughter of David Pikholz and Szerka Kawa of the IF4 family. Those records indeed gave us that proof, so we merged those families on the website. A discussion of that family appears at http://www.pikholz.org/Mailings/Letter48a.txt . We received a few pieces of information from the magnate project which we began some months ago and as a result, I prepared an analysis of who lived in which houses. This analysis is limited to those records we have in hand, as house numbers do not appear in the indecies. The data for Skalat is at http://www.pikholz.org/Houses/Skalat.html and for Rozdol is at http://www.pikholz.org/Houses/Rozdol.html . I had long suspected that David and Szerka of the IF4 family were the parents of Yitzhak of the YITZHAK family, but I couldn't prove it. The house analysis showed that both David and Szerka died in house 145 where Yitzhak's children were born. After consultation, we decided that this was sufficient to merge the YITZHAK family into IF4, Yitzhak being a brother of Scheindel-Pesche (above). The same type of proof showed up in house 418 in Skalat where Perec (the head of the IRENE family) died while Yaakov of the BARNEY family was having children. Since here too we suspected that Perec was Yaakov's father, we took this as proof and merged the two families. So the Pikholz family has been simplified by the elimination of three independent families, by merging them into other families. That qualifies as significant progress. After some correspondence with Swiss authorities, I identified Salome Johannes-Pickholz, whose death notice appeared in the NY Times in 1990. She is the third wife of Solomon Pickholz (no children) of the Fischel/Langenauer branch of the RavJG family and I had previously been in touch with her step-daughter who lives in Jerusalem. Particularly interesting is the cooperation of the Swiss, who in other areas are notorious for their secrecy. Two days ago, I got a phone call from my former neighbor Dalia Pickholz Kaplan of the BUCZACZ family. Dalia had been at the wedding of the daughter of another Israeli Pickholz cousin (Miriam) who is on my snail- mail list but who has not been forthcoming about her family background. Dalia and Miriam's grandfathers were brothers. Anyway, at this wedding, Dalia met a second cousin (Rivka) whose grandmother was a sister of the two grandfathers. Miriam knew her, of course, but Dalia had never heard of this branch at all. This evening I spoke with Rivka and she gave me much basic information about her branch of the family and promised that she would have more for me in a couple of weeks. Rivka's grandmother married a man named Bernstein from Radautz in Bukovina and her children were born there. I may not get the website updated for this family before the holiday. While we are speaking, one of my gen correspondents says that she had neighbors named Pickholz in Great Neck NY. All she remembers is that he is/was a neurologist and that the wife's name is/was Judy. Can someone identify this family? Thanks to some outside help from Philadelphia, we may have a new lead on the elusive Smith/Pickholtz family. But you have heard that before and nothing much has come of it. That will do for now. Let me wish you all a good year and that you and your families be written and sealed in the Book of Life for 5765. Israel P.
