Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 01:01:24 +0200 Of late I have added several people to this list - mostly grandchildren of Berish Pickholz. I am also sending this to Sheldon the Levi, whom I first wrote earlier today - because if I was told correctly, some of this is related specifically to his family. Also, its about time we got Marvin into this project, so at least for this letter, would one of the Wall Street cousins please tie him into his chair in fromt of a monitor for the time it takes to read this. Three things came in today's post. First a letter in German from the Austrian archives, responding to a request I made in December regarding some Pickholz Holocaust victims. I do not read German, so I've put it aside for this evening. Second was an envelope from Steve Pickholtz, who did some USA phone book lookups on a better search engine than the one I've been using. he had quite a few more names than I had, tho of the new ones, most I already had from other sources. I'll begin cross- checking etc later and we'll see what else floats to the surface. Maybe I'll take this opportunity to ask if anyone knows Else Pickholz in Poughkeepsie or Haim & Leah in Chestnut Hill Mass. or Joseph on Palisade ave, Bronx) About three weeks ago, Raymond P. told me that his father and grandparents are buried in Beth David Cemetery, Elmont NY, and that there are other Pickhol(t)z burials there as well. So I wrote to the cemetery and today I received info on twenty-four graves. Few have next of kin listed and none have parents' names. (I specifically asked about Raymond's gf's father's name, which would presumably be on the gf's stone.) They did not answer my question as to whether they have a photography service. Perhaps someone will phone them and follow that up. Following is a summary, arranged by Plot Owner, together with my own comments. Chevra Achim Verein Anshei Brozdowitz ------------------------------------------------------- Pinkas and Sarah - identified as husband and wife, with reference to son Solomon (who died later and is not among the beth david burials). This is the family which was nearly wiped out in the Holocaust. Pinkas has one surviving niece (Solomon was an only child with no family of his own) - here in Jerusalem. Pinkas' grave should say "ben David Shemuel." Robert - this is the family you wrote me about. Bessie the wife of Isidore. Raymond has already identified this person, though birth date does not match Social Security info. Bessie, not the wife of Isidore. Died at age 62 in December 1946. Lived at 46 Pitt Street. I've been looking for the person behind this address, as Stryj Holocaust survivors Sol & Izak went to that address in June 1946. Izak will be here next month and I'll get more then. (Sol died some years ago - his daughter lives here and it turns out she is the same one who was in school with my twin sisters in the early 1970's!) Sol and Izak are Pickholz from both their mother and their father. Ethel, mother of Isaac. No address. Died 1968 at age 83. Anyone?? Abraham, died at age 79 in June 1952. Address 358 South Third street, Brooklyn. I believe this is the gf of Jerry and Marvin and brother of Berish. Confirmation please? Minnie (Mamie), died 1959 at age 85, lists son Sol. That should be Manya, the wife of Abraham. That's the person who got this family into the Brozdowitz cemetery plot, no? Moses and Dora, identified as husband and wife, and mentioning son Bertold. I'm told that Sheldon the Levi is the son of this Bertold. That makes the Levi question more interesting for we also know that Moses' father was Berl Pickholz (mother Berta Fox) - so the Levi man / Pickholz woman marriage must have been even earlier. Isidore - Raymond's father (Raymond's brother is mentioned by name) Solomon died 1955 at age 81. Lived at 334 Madison. that should be Raymond's grandfather. I don't see Solomon's wife, Alta, here anywhere. Rose, died 1948 at age 42. Lived 345 Madison St. NY. Offhand doesn't ring a bell. Hersh, died 1955 age 80. Lived 43 St. Marks Place, NY, says "c/o Sol" Also doesn't seem to ring any bells here. Oestreicher Galiziane Lodge 288 --------------------------------------------- Sam (died 1958, age 75) and Gussie (died 1968, age 83) seem to be man and wife. Gussie's card refres to "son/ Isidore Cohen." This may require some creative thinking or some inside information. Chev Beth Hamedrash Sheiras Israel ---------------------------------------------------- Benjamin (Robert is this your grandfather??) Died Wyckoff Hospital, March 19 1954 at age 76. No address listed. Fannie, died 1948, age 64. Lived at 1844 60th Street (may be 50th or 80th - not clear) Brooklyn. Cong. Sharis Adath Israel Menhag Sfard ------------------------------------------------------- Helen Pickholtz, lists son Irving Meyerowitz. (Must have been married to a Pickholtz later in life.) Died 1964 at age 85. Young Petofi S. & B. S. (The only word I understand here is YOUNG and I'm not sure what it means in the context of a cemetery!) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Frances Pickholz, died 1944, age 45. Lived 724 E 27th, Brooklyn Dave & Isidore Pickholz Plot (brothers - Marvin's father and Gail's grandfather) -------------------------------------- Dave (mentions Gail's father by name) and Pauline (mentions husband Dave) Rae & Irving - that would be Marvin's parents. (I guess Marvin's father changed from Isidore to Irving at some point.) Gussie (Golda) died 1955 at age 66. Is this Berish's wife?? Why is she in this plot?? That's it. Pictures of the stones would be useful, if someone cares to check it out. Drowning in papers, I'll sign off. Israel P. -- End --
